Action Democratic Party's 2027 pick: what the record shows about Abbas-Bin Aliyu
A former Atiku aide is INEC's listed ADP candidate. The party's registration and history are documented; his own record is largely a self- and party-description.
INEC’s signed final list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election - the commission’s own document, downloaded from inecnigeria.org and read here, not a newspaper’s reprint of it - carries the entry on page 1 of three. Every page is signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary of the Commission. Entry 2, against ADP, reads "ABBAS-BIN ALIYU", age 44, male, with Ike Chinazam, 50, as running mate and filed qualifications of FSLC SSCE BSC.
That printing settles two things the coverage got wrong. Several outlets rendered the name "Aliyu Bin Abbas", reversing it; INEC prints "ABBAS-BIN ALIYU". Others called the party the "Alliance for Democracy and Progress"; INEC’s register of parties gives ADP as the Action Democratic Party. Where press and commission disagree about what a commission document says, we follow the commission.
The register adds the detail that makes this candidacy interesting. The ADP’s national chairman is Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani - the man who was the party’s own presidential candidate in 2023. The party has therefore not put its established leader on the ballot this time. Its long-standing chairman remains in place while a 44-year-old with no documented elected office carries its ticket.
The ADP itself has a real paper trail. INEC registered it in June 2017, when it presented itself as a third force against the APC and the PDP. It polled only modestly in 2023 and has never been a national contender. Fielding a less-known candidate in 2027 is continuous with that history rather than a break from it.
Alongside it we read INEC’s register of political parties, which lists 22 registered parties. Only 18 of them field a presidential candidate in 2027; APGA, the NNPP, Accord and the Youth Party field none.
On Abbas himself the record thins sharply. Reporting from the 2026 ADP convention in Abuja describes him as a former political aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the founder of a body called the National Youth Alliance. Both are attributed characterisations from convention coverage. Neither the aide relationship nor the existence and status of that youth body is backed by a document we hold, and we do not repeat them as established.
We could not establish that he has held elected office. INEC’s list gives us his age and the qualifications he filed - a first school leaving certificate, a senior secondary certificate and a bachelor’s degree - and that is the extent of what any document tells us about the man.
The firm facts here are institutional. The ADP’s registration, its leadership and its record are documented; its 2027 candidate’s public history, on what can be retrieved, begins at the convention that nominated him. That is a description of the evidence, not a judgement on the candidate.
What this rests on
The candidacy, the printed name, the age, the running mate and the filed qualifications rest on INEC’s own signed final list, read on the page. Party registration and abbreviation from the INEC register read directly; candidate entry from press reprints of the INEC list; the 'former Atiku aide' characterisation from attributed convention reporting.
What this does not establish
The candidacy is documented; the person is not. Abbas's date of birth, career history, the exact nature of his role with Atiku Abubakar, and the status of the 'National Youth Alliance' are not confirmed by primary records. No prior elected office is documented.
What we did ourselves
We reconciled conflicting press renderings of the party name against INEC's register, and distinguished the well-documented ADP institutional history from the thinly-sourced personal biography of its 2027 candidate.
