Vero Record

Reporting and documentary investigation from Nigeria. What the paper says, and what it does not.

About

About Vero Record

Vero Record is an independent investigative newsroom covering Nigeria. It reports on politics, public money and accountability from primary documents: budgets, audit reports, court records, company registers and official statements.

What we publish

Graded reports on Nigerian politics, federal and state finances, and the institutions that are meant to account for them. 76 reports are published so far, 63 of them graded (A), meaning the finding rests on a primary record we retrieved and read. Every report says what the record does not establish.

Long-form dossiers on public figures, beginning with The Tinubu Files, 487 pages and 600 numbered findings. Files on Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are in preparation.

The Vero Archive, a free public library of Nigerian records: 1,558,428 catalogue records from 69 sources and 87,084 files, including government documents recovered after they disappeared from gov.ng websites.

Dustline, a map of armed violence in Nigeria by local government area, with sources for every incident.

How we work

Every claim carries a grade: (A) a primary record we retrieved, (B) a statement by someone identifiable, (C) our own inference. The full method is set out on How we grade evidence. Corrections are published in place and dated on the corrections page.

We support no party and no candidate. Reports on the government and on the opposition are held to the same standard, and every presidential candidate on the 2027 ballot has a report here.

Who is behind it: Dr Vero

Every report is written and edited by Dr Vero, the investigations editor of Vero Record. Dr Vero is Nigerian and has spent many years on one kind of work: reading the public record that others leave unread, and connecting names, dates and documents across courts, registers, budgets and archives. Dr Vero publishes on X as @VeroRecord and on Reddit.

Dr Vero is a working name. The newsroom does not publish the names of its staff: in Nigeria, journalists who report on public money are arrested and held over their work. Readers are asked to judge the work by its documents, which are printed with every report, not by a byline.

Vero Record carries no advertising, takes no institutional funding, and records nothing about who reads it. Read why on What this is for and how on our privacy page.
