A Labour Party faction has a 2027 presidential candidate, and which faction matters as much as the candidate

Sunday Chibuzo Okereke is on INEC's final list as the Labour Party's presidential candidate. He was nominated by the Nenadi Usman-led wing of a party still contesting its own leadership after the 2023 Obi campaign.

INEC’s signed final list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election - the commission’s own document, downloaded from inecnigeria.org and read here, not a newspaper’s reprint of it - carries the entry on page 2 of three. Every page is signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary of the Commission. Entry 10, against LP, reads "OKEREKE SUNDAY CHIBUZO", age 43, male, with Konto Hajja Bintu, 54, female, as running mate. His filed qualifications are printed as "FSLC NABTEC Ph.D., MLS (Distinction), MSC (Distinction) & BSC (Hons) (Nig)" - among the fullest in the field.

The question this candidacy raises is not who he is but which Labour Party he stands for, and INEC’s second document answers it. The commission’s register of political parties gives the Labour Party’s national chairman as "Sen. Nenadi E. Usman". The party has been split since 2023 between factions associated with Julius Abure and with Nenadi Usman, and Okereke was nominated by the Usman wing. INEC’s own register names Usman as chairman, and INEC’s own candidate list carries Okereke as the Labour Party’s candidate. On the commission’s records, the question is not open.

We put that carefully, because a register entry is not a judgment. Leadership disputes in Nigerian parties are settled in court as often as in convention, and INEC’s register is a record of who the commission currently recognises, not a ruling that binds anyone. Three chairmanships on that same register are marked "By Court Order"; the Labour Party’s is not among them.

The party context is the weight behind the candidacy. The Labour Party carried Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, which INEC’s own report records as a third-place national finish, with 1,960,589 votes and 89.62 per cent in the South East. That is the platform Okereke inherits, minus the candidate who created it - Obi now runs for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, and the register shows the NDC’s own chairmanship held by court order.

One further thing on INEC’s list is worth flagging to anyone searching for him. There are two Okerekes among the eighteen presidential candidates: Okereke Sunday Chibuzo for the Labour Party, and Okereke Nkem Esther, 43, for the National Rescue Movement. They are different people on different tickets, and the coincidence of surname and age invites exactly the confusion we would rather pre-empt.

Alongside it we read INEC’s register of political parties, which lists 22 registered parties. Only 18 of them field a presidential candidate in 2027; APGA, the NNPP, Accord and the Youth Party field none.

On policy, Premium Times and the Guardian report him proposing zero-based budgeting, a shift from a palliative economy toward production, and an institutional governance reset. These are stated positions attributed to him - intentions, not achievements, and not programmes anyone has assessed.

Beyond the qualifications he filed and that stated platform, Okereke’s personal record is not documented in the sources reviewed. The firm material here is the commission’s: his entry, his running mate, his filed degrees, and a register that names the faction whose ticket he carries.

What this rests on

The candidacy, the printed name, the age, the running mate and the filed qualifications rest on INEC’s own signed final list, read on the page. Channels Television for the nomination; Premium Times and the Guardian for the platform; the documented 2023 LP/Obi campaign and the ongoing Abure-Usman leadership dispute.

What this does not establish

The candidacy is documented; the person is not. Which Labour Party faction INEC will finally recognise for 2027 is unresolved; Okereke's biography beyond filed qualifications is undocumented here; his platform is a stated intention, not an assessed programme.

What we did ourselves

Placed the candidacy inside the documented post-2023 Labour Party leadership split rather than treating 'the Labour Party candidate' as unambiguous.
