The National Rescue Movement's candidate holds a doctorate, is 43, and is the second woman the 2027 candidate lists lose
Okereke Nkem Esther appears at entry 12 of INEC's signed final list, with a PhD among the qualifications she filed. She is not the Okereke on the Labour Party ticket, and she is absent from most published accounts of the field.
INEC's signed final list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election - the commission's own document, downloaded from inecnigeria.org and read here - carries at entry 12, on page 2 of three, "OKEREKE NKEM ESTHER", age 43, female, against the NRM, with Sulaiman Nasir Muhammed, 35, male, as running mate. Her filed qualifications are printed as "FSLC SSCE Bsc, MSC, Phd". The page is signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary of the Commission.
She is one of two women among eighteen presidential candidates, and one of the two candidates that the sixteen-name lists in wide circulation leave out. The other is Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori of the National Democratic Party. Vero carried the same sixteen names until we counted the commission's list ourselves.
Her entry also contains a trap for anyone searching for her. There are two Okerekes on this ballot: Okereke Sunday Chibuzo, 43, the Labour Party's candidate, and Okereke Nkem Esther, 43, the National Rescue Movement's. Same surname, same age, different people, different parties, two lines apart on the same page. It is the kind of coincidence that merges two candidates into one in a database, and we flag it rather than leave it to do its work quietly.
On the qualifications she filed she is among the better-credentialed candidates in the field. A doctorate appears in her INEC entry, alongside a master's and a bachelor's degree. Only the Labour Party's Okereke files a comparably full list. What the commission's record does not say is where any of those degrees were taken or in what discipline, and we could not establish it.
INEC's register of political parties gives the National Rescue Movement's national chairman as Prince (Dr.) Chinedu Obi - so, unlike four other parties on this ballot, the NRM has not nominated its own chairman. The register lists 22 registered parties in all; four of them, APGA, the NNPP, Accord and the Youth Party, field no presidential candidate in 2027.
Beyond those two commission documents, the record is close to empty. We found no reliably sourced biography, no prior elected or appointed office, no account of the primary or process that produced her nomination, and no campaign material we could attribute with confidence. The party's manifesto and structure are likewise undocumented in anything we retrieved.
The picture on this report is her line in INEC's list. We hold no photograph of her that we can attribute with certainty, and on a ballot that already contains two Okerekes of the same age, a face matched to the wrong one would be a serious error rather than a small one.
What is documented is exact and narrow: a 43-year-old woman with a doctorate, running with a 35-year-old man, as the National Rescue Movement's candidate for President of Nigeria, on a list signed by the Secretary of the Commission. That she is running at all is something most published accounts of this election do not tell their readers.
What this rests on
Two INEC documents read directly: the signed final list of candidates and the commission's register of political parties. The presence of two Okerekes in the field, the count of eighteen candidates and the four parties fielding none were read off those documents.
What this does not establish
It does not establish where her degrees were taken or in what subjects; INEC records only that they were filed. It does not establish her career, any prior office, or how she was nominated. It does not establish why published lists of the field omit her. It does not establish any connection between her and the Labour Party's Okereke, and we found none - the shared surname and age appear to be coincidence.
What we did ourselves
We counted INEC's own candidate list rather than repeating the circulating summary, which showed the field is eighteen and that both missing candidates are women. We also identified the duplicate surname and age between the NRM and Labour Party candidates, a collision no coverage we read had noted.
