What is on record for Action Alliance's 2027 candidate, Rufai Omo-Aje

INEC lists the Ede businessman and AA national chairman as the party's presidential candidate. Beyond the candidacy and a stated platform, the personal record is thin.

INEC’s signed final list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election - the commission’s own document, downloaded from inecnigeria.org and read here, not a newspaper’s reprint of it - carries the entry on page 1 of three. Every page is signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary of the Commission. Entry 1, against AA, reads "RUFAI ADEKUNLE OMO-AJE", age 71, male, with Shehu Hussaini, 56, as running mate and filed qualifications of FLSC WAEC.

Read beside INEC’s register of political parties, that entry acquires a second dimension. The register gives the national chairman of the Action Alliance as "Hon. Adekunle Rufai Omoaje (By Court Order)". The party’s candidate and the party’s chairman are the same man, and the commission records that he holds the chairmanship not by the party’s own process but by order of a court.

Two details are worth pinning down because they are easy to read past. The first is that INEC spells him two ways in its own records - "OMO-AJE" hyphenated on the candidate list, "Omoaje" unhyphenated on the register. The second is that the phrase "By Court Order" appears against only three of the 22 chairmanships on that register: the Action Alliance, the National Democratic Party and the Nigeria Democratic Congress, which is Peter Obi’s platform. Leadership settled by litigation is not this party’s peculiarity; it is a pattern the register makes visible.

He is also not alone in leading the party he is running for. Four of the parties on the 2027 ballot are chaired by their own presidential or vice-presidential candidate: the Action Alliance, the African Action Congress under Omoyele Sowore, the Boot Party under Sunday Adenuga and the National Democratic Party under Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori. In each case the person nominating and the person nominated sit at the same desk.

Alongside it we read INEC’s register of political parties, which lists 22 registered parties. Only 18 of them field a presidential candidate in 2027; APGA, the NNPP, Accord and the Youth Party field none.

What the party says about him is a separate class of claim, and we keep it separate. Reporting from May 2026 has him emerging as candidate by consensus at the party’s Abuja primary; party material describes him as an Ede-born businessman from Osun State with a date of birth of 15 January 1955. That birth date is at least consistent with the age of 71 on INEC’s list, which is the only independent check available to us, and we offer it as consistency rather than confirmation.

His stated priorities - economic recovery, national security, job creation, infrastructure - are campaign pledges. For a candidate with no prior elected or appointed office that we could document, they are also the whole of the public platform: there is no record of governing against which to read them.

So the documented Omo-Aje is narrow and specific. He is 71, he filed a first school leaving certificate and a WAEC result with the commission, he is the Action Alliance’s candidate and, by a court’s decision, its chairman. Beyond that the record is what his party says about him.

What this rests on

The candidacy, the printed name, the age, the running mate and the filed qualifications rest on INEC’s own signed final list, read on the page. Candidacy and party status rest on the INEC list and INEC register; biographical details rest on party statements and party-sourced reporting.

What this does not establish

The candidacy is documented; the person is not. We could not independently verify Omo-Aje's date of birth or business interests against a primary document. No prior public office is documented. The stated platform is a pledge, not a record.

What we did ourselves

We set the party's own account of Omo-Aje against INEC's party register and the reported final candidate list, and separated the one verifiable fact - that he is AA's listed candidate - from the party-supplied biography.
