Reporting and documentary investigation from Nigeria. What the paper says, and what it does not.

The ZLP's 2027 candidate is the party's own founder, a veteran of Nigeria's earlier Labour Party

Daniel Daberechukwu 'Dan' Nwanyanwu is on INEC's final list as the Zenith Labour Party's presidential candidate. Unlike most minor-party nominees, he has a long documented public record as a former Labour Party national chairman.

INEC’s signed final list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election - the commission’s own document, downloaded from inecnigeria.org and read here, not a newspaper’s reprint of it - carries the entry on page 3 of three. Every page is signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary of the Commission. The entry reads "NWANYANWU DANIEL DABERECHUKWU", age 66, male, with Hassan Khalid, 37, as running mate - which settles a full name that press summaries had carried only in part. The qualifications filed with the commission are printed as FSLC WAEC LLB, LLM.

INEC’s register of political parties gives the Zenith Labour Party’s national chairman as "Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, OFR". Chairman and candidate are the same man, and the commission records him with a national honour, Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, after his name. He is one of four candidates on this ballot who lead the party nominating them.

Unlike most of the minor-party field, his public record runs back decades and is not in dispute. He chaired the original Labour Party from 2004 until 2014 - the party under which Olusegun Mimiko won the Ondo State governorship - before resigning as its Board of Trustees chairman and leaving in February 2015. He now leads the Zenith Labour Party, which he is associated with founding. That is a documented political career of twenty years, and it is what separates him from the near-anonymous candidates elsewhere on the same page.

A distinction has to be drawn here, because the two parties invite exactly the wrong conclusion. The Labour Party that carried Peter Obi in 2023 and the Zenith Labour Party that Nwanyanwu leads are separate registered parties with a shared lineage and a shared word in their names. Both appear on INEC’s register; both field a presidential candidate in 2027, and they are not the same vehicle. A reader who merges them will misread both the 2023 result and the present field.

Alongside it we read INEC’s register of political parties, which lists 22 registered parties. Only 18 of them field a presidential candidate in 2027; APGA, the NNPP, Accord and the Youth Party field none.

On platform, the News Agency of Nigeria and Authority report him pledging to prioritise national unity and to tackle corruption, insecurity, poor electricity supply and unemployment - stated campaign commitments of the kind every convention produces, attributed to him and not tested here.

Three things we could not pin to a primary record, and we mark them rather than smooth them over: the ZLP’s exact INEC registration date, its performance in past elections, and Nwanyanwu’s precise role in founding it. Each rests on secondary sources rather than a gazette or a commission document.

His chairmanship of the older Labour Party, by contrast, is well attested, and INEC’s two documents now anchor the present: a full legal name, an age of 66, a running mate of 37, and a chairmanship of the party he is running for, recorded by the commission with his national honour attached.

What this rests on

The candidacy, the printed name, the age, the running mate and the filed qualifications rest on INEC’s own signed final list, read on the page. Premium Times and Authority for the nomination and platform; Wikipedia and a 2023 civic-data candidate profile for Nwanyanwu's Labour Party chairmanship (2004-2015) and ZLP leadership.

What this does not establish

The candidacy is documented; the person is not. The ZLP's exact INEC registration date and its past electoral results were not retrieved from primary INEC records; Nwanyanwu's precise role in founding the ZLP is attributed, not primary-sourced here; his platform is stated intention.

What we did ourselves

Distinguished this candidate from the other minor-party nominees by documenting his prior public career, and flagged which parts of his party-founding lineage rest on secondary sources.
