The YPP's 2027 candidate is a substitute nominee who came from the Labour Party
Peter Ada Agada is on INEC's final list as the Young Progressives Party's presidential candidate, a replacement nominee who defected after being disqualified from a Labour Party primary. The party he now leads is the documented part of the story.
INEC’s signed final list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election - the commission’s own document, downloaded from inecnigeria.org and read here, not a newspaper’s reprint of it - carries the entry on page 3 of three. Every page is signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary of the Commission. The entry reads "AGADA PETER ADA", age 54, male, with Key Patience Ndidi, 52, female, as running mate. The qualifications filed with the commission are printed as WAEC BSc, & MBA.
How he reached that line is better documented than he is. He is a substitute. Tribune Online reported the YPP replacing an earlier nominee, Zugwai-Chukwu, with Agada; QED.NG and Vanguard reported that Agada had been a Labour Party aspirant who crossed to the YPP in June after a dispute over his disqualification from the Labour Party primary. The party’s 2027 candidate is therefore a late replacement who arrived from another party months before the list closed.
INEC’s register of political parties gives the Young Progressives Party’s national chairman as Comrade Bishop Amakiri - so unlike several of the smaller parties on this ballot, the YPP has not nominated its own chairman, and the substitution was made by a leadership distinct from the candidate.
The party is the documented half of the story. The YPP was founded on 7 June 2017 as a social-democratic alternative to the PDP and the APC, and in 2019 it fielded a serious ticket: Kingsley Moghalu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, with Umma Getso as his running mate. That is a real institutional record - a founding date, a registration, a prior presidential ticket with a nationally known economist on it - against which a late substitution can be measured.
Alongside it we read INEC’s register of political parties, which lists 22 registered parties. Only 18 of them field a presidential candidate in 2027; APGA, the NNPP, Accord and the Youth Party field none.
Agada’s stated platform, reported by Vanguard, ThisDay and The Sun, centres on a digital governance model he calls LabourDirect, a slogan of "governance with GPS", and a ten-point agenda emphasising production and youth. These are campaign statements attributed to him, not implemented policy.
What is not established is the interior of the sequence. We do not know the grounds for his disqualification from the Labour Party primary, the process by which it was decided, his career before 2026, or how the YPP came to swap him in for its earlier nominee. Those decisions were taken inside two parties and neither has published its reasoning.
So the visible mechanics are firm - disqualification, defection, substitution, a signed INEC entry at the end of it - and the reasoning behind each step is not on any record we could obtain. We trace the first and mark the second as closed to us.
What this rests on
The candidacy, the printed name, the age, the running mate and the filed qualifications rest on INEC’s own signed final list, read on the page. Tribune Online, QED.NG and Vanguard for the substitution and defection; Nairametrics for the INEC profile.
What this does not establish
The candidacy is documented; the person is not. The reason for and process behind Agada's LP disqualification, his earlier career, and the internal YPP substitution decision are undocumented here; his platform is stated intention.
What we did ourselves
Traced how the YPP's 2027 nominee arrived on the ballot - a substitution following a defection from the Labour Party - and set it against the party's documented 2017 founding and 2019 record.
