Adewole Adebayo's paper trail is a candidacy, not a vote count, and the 2023 national number is still an open record

The SDP flagbearer's documented record is clear on how he became a candidate twice over. What is not cleanly documented from a primary INEC source is how many votes he actually won in 2023 - a gap Vero states plainly rather than fills with second-hand arithmetic.

INEC’s own final list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election - not a newspaper’s reprint of it, but the signed commission document, which we downloaded from inecnigeria.org and read - carries this candidacy on page 3 of three. The entry is printed surname first, as "ADEBAYO ADEWOLE EBENEZER", against SDP, age 54, with BUGAJE USMAN MUHAMMED (74) as running mate. The list is signed on every page by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary of the Commission. It names eighteen presidential candidates, two more than most published summaries of the field. The qualifications filed with the commission are printed as FSLC WASCE LLB.

One part of this record we can show rather than relay. INEC’s own Report of the 2023 General Election, which we downloaded and read, lists the presidential candidates by party and mode of nomination; at printed page 121 the Social Democratic Party’s row reads "Adebayo Adewole". That is the commission’s own confirmation that he carried the SDP’s presidential ticket in 2023 and how he was nominated. It is also where the commission’s published account stops: the report contains no vote totals at all, for him or for anyone. His widely-quoted 2023 tally is therefore still press-sourced, and the single document that would settle it - Form EC8E, the declaration of result - INEC has not published.

INEC’s signed 2027 list adds the particulars the 2023 report does not carry. At page 3, entry 16, it prints "ADEBAYO ADEWOLE EBENEZER", age 54, male, with Bugaje Usman Muhammed, 74, as running mate, and qualifications of "FSLC WASCE LLB" - the law degree behind the practice he is usually described by. His running mate, at 74, files a doctorate.

INEC’s register of political parties gives the Social Democratic Party’s national chairman as Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe. The SDP is one of 22 registered parties and one of the 18 fielding a presidential candidate in 2027; four registered parties - APGA, the NNPP, Accord and the Youth Party - field none.

So Adebayo is the unusual case in this field of a candidate whose candidacies are documented twice over by the commission, in 2023 and in 2027, while the thing most often cited about him - how many people voted for him - is documented nowhere we can reach. INEC has published no national tally for any 2023 presidential candidate, and the one page that would settle it, the declaration of result, is not online.

Adewole Adebayo, a lawyer and media entrepreneur born on 8 January 1972, has a well-documented candidacy record, and it is worth separating what is firm from what is not. He won the SDP presidential primary in Abuja on 9 June 2022 with 1,526 votes, defeating his sole rival, Khadija Okunnu-Lamidi, who polled 83. He was then returned unopposed as the SDP's presidential candidate at the party's convention in 2026 for the 2027 race — chosen twice, by two different routes.

His posture since 2023 is also on the record and is unusually pointed. He has repeatedly described the 2023 poll as a charade and said that he ran against INEC, not against his opponents — a dated, attributable framing rather than an offhand complaint, and one that places him among the candidates who reject the last result outright.

What resists clean documentation is the single number a reader would most want: his 2023 national vote total. Nigerian coverage of the presidential result consistently truncates at the top four candidates — Tinubu, Atiku, Obi and Kwankwaso — and Wikipedia's national results table lists only those. A candidate-profile aggregator records Adebayo with 80,267 votes, about 0.33 per cent, but that is a secondary compilation, not INEC's own declaration form, and Vero will not launder it into a fact.

So the report states the limit rather than papering over it. Adebayo's documented trail establishes that he was, twice, his party's chosen presidential candidate, and that he publicly rejects the 2023 result as rigged against him. It does not, on any primary record we retrieved, establish his exact national vote — that figure remains an open item pending INEC's own IReV or EC8E declaration.

There is a small irony worth naming: a candidate who built his post-2023 case on INEC's unreliability is also a candidate whose own vote cannot be cleanly recovered from the public record INEC left behind. That is not proof of his argument, but it is the kind of gap that gives an argument like his room to live.

No CAC registration numbers for his law firm or his television station were found, and no INEC asset declaration was retrieved. The report makes no claim about his finances or his business record for the simple reason that the documents to support one were not in hand.

What this rests on

The candidacy, the printed name, the age, the running mate and the filed qualifications rest on INEC’s own signed final list, read on the page. INEC’s own election report for the candidacy, read on the page. Everything else, including his vote total, rests on reporting. The primary tally, the re-nomination and the 'ran against INEC' framing are corroborated across multiple attributable Nigerian outlets. The 80,267/0.33% figure rests on a single secondary aggregator and could not be confirmed against INEC's own declaration.

What this does not establish

INEC’s report carries no vote totals, so his 2023 result is not established by any document we hold; INEC publishes national tallies only as per-polling-unit result sheets on its portal, and Form EC8E is not online. No verified INEC national vote total for Adebayo/SDP in 2023 - the aggregator figure of 80,267 is unconfirmed against a primary INEC form and should not be treated as established. No CAC RC numbers for his law firm or KAFTAN TV were found; no INEC asset declaration retrieved.

What we did ourselves

We tested the obvious headline number - the 2023 national vote - against primary sources, found it unretrievable from INEC's own record, and report that gap as the finding rather than laundering a second-hand figure into fact.
