Vero Record

Reporting and documentary investigation from Nigeria. What the paper says, and what it does not.

Dispatches  /

DON’T TRUST DR VERO. Check him.

Someone recently asked how they could verify our authenticity. I’ve been thinking about that question because the answer says more about VERO than any biography could.

We don’t want your trust. We want your scrutiny.

Open the source. Check the date. Read beyond the part we highlighted. Recalculate our numbers. Search the company yourself. If something doesn’t add up, challenge us. If you find something we missed, bring it here. That is how this should work.

Since starting VERO, one thing has become obvious: sometimes the information isn’t hidden at all. Nobody stays with it long enough. A court case becomes a headline and disappears. A government report gets published and forgotten. A company name sits inside an old document until someone decides to look at it again.

That is the space we want VERO to occupy.

Not faster news. Longer memory.

Someone here recently suggested a public tracker for Nigerian corruption cases — not just who was arrested or charged, but what actually happened afterwards. Trial. Acquittal. Conviction. Withdrawal. Five years of silence. We think that idea deserves to exist.

Because maybe Nigeria doesn’t only have an information problem.

Maybe it has a memory problem.

VERO is still early, but the direction is becoming clearer. We don't need you to believe in Dr Vero.

We want to build a record that survives him.

And if you think that is worth building, help the work travel. Upvote it. Share it. Send it to someone who will actually open the documents. Right now, that genuinely helps us more than praise.

The more eyes on the record, the harder it becomes for important things to quietly disappear.

About this dispatch

This is a public post by Dr Vero, archived here as published, with its full text and every graphic that accompanied it. Dispatches are written for a general audience and are not graded: they are a record of what was said publicly and when, not a sourced report.

Graded, document-sourced reporting is kept separate, in the newsroom and the dossiers.
